“Arte è Scienza”: CHNet participates in five sites to the fifth edition of the event
“Arte è scienza”, the review promoted by AIAr to reflect on the vital relationship between cultural heritage and scientific techniques, has reached its fifth edition. From November 30th to December 2nd researchers, hosted by Italian sites and museums, will show the potential of scientific applications in the study and conservation of our artistic and cultural heritage.
While the official entry of AIAr into CHNet is being formalized, the laboratories of the network participate in the initiative in five of the fourteen locations:
Aidone (EN)

A seminary about “Science and Technology for the study of polychromy in antique art” will be held in the Archeological Museum of Aidone. The talks will be finalized to illustrate the role of color in the antique art and the importance of diagnostic analyses. Then, the project “Morgantina a Colori”, started in 2014 by the archaeologist Serena Raffiotta, will be presented. The project is about the study of pigments in the finds from Morgantina site. Some of these finds have been analysed in a research campaign promoted by E-RIHS.it and conducted by CHNet researchers. At the end of the seminary, an in-situ laboratory with non destructive and non invasive methodologies will take place on some finds of the Museum.
The event is organized by “Polo Regionale” of Piazza Armerina, Aidone and Enna and by the “Centro Regionale per la Progettazione e per il Restauro”
Carditello (CE)
Sunday, December 9th 2018, 10.00 – 13.00
The event will be held at the Real Site of Carditello, a site located in the province of Caserta, which is part of a group of 22 sites of the royal dynasty of the Bourbons of Naples. These were not just places for leisure (especially for hunting) of the Bourbon royal family and its court, but they constituted real companies, an expression of entrepreneurship inspired by the enlightenment ideas in vogue in those times.
In the various rooms of the Reggia di Carditello different measurements were carried out, in order to characterize wall paintings that decorate the interiors of the main floor. In particular, the analyses were directed to the study of the materials constituting the pictorial drafts, of the executive technique and to the evaluation of the current state of conservation.
Furthermore, an outdoor and indoor monitoring campaign of various environmental parameters (thermo hygrometric, particulate, etc.) was carried out in order to evaluate the impact of these pollutants on the building.
A talk by researchers of AIAr, University and INFN-CHNet will be held, in order to describe the techniques used and show the results obtained.
A series of practical demonstrations will follow, in which the various research groups will show the functioning of the various scientific equipment to the visitors, involving them directly in the measurement operations.
Catania

The event will take place at the “Castello Ursino” Museum.
Interactive laboratories will be held, aimed at highlighting the role of physics and computer science in the research and valorisation of cultural heritage. In particular, laboratories about colorimetry, Raman spectrometry, Infrared reflectometry and 3D scanning and modelling will take place, held by researches from Catania University and CHNet .
The event is organized with the advocacy of Catania University and Catania Municipality and will be held with the participation of students from the high school “G. Galilei” of Catania.
Ferrara

The event will focus on the painting “Decollation of the Baptist” by Giuseppe Mazzuoli called the Bastarolo (1536 circa – 1589), the grandiose sixteenth-century table that can be seen in these days during the restoration carried out in the Estense Castle.
During the meeting the technique of Ultraviolet radiation will be shown to the public; this is among the most important non-invasive diagnostic methodologies made available by the evolution of scientific techniques. It will not be a theoretical illustration, but an unmissable practical demonstration, carried out directly on the work of art, which will transform the restoration site in a scientific laboratory open to visitors.
Sarno (SA)
Friday, November 30th, 10.00 – 13.00
The event will be held at the National Archaeological Museum of the Sarno Valley, a museum that collects various artefacts from a large area of Salerno and related to the period from VIII BC to II DC.
A talk by researchers of AIAr, University and INFN CHNet will be held, in order to describe techniques used and show case studies concerning the use of physical methodologies in the characterization of materials, in the elementary evaluation of pigments, in radiocarbon dating and paleonutritional investigations, and in the evaluation of the impact of environmental pollution on cultural heritage.
A series of practical demonstrations will follow, in which the various research groups will show the functioning of the scientific equipment to the visitors, involving them directly in the measurement operations.
